Practical Applications of Cultural Perspectives

Conversations about culture and identity in helping relationships


Questions pertaining to a person’s culture are often left at the end of an assessment instead of embedded throughout. This is inopportune because discussing one’s cultural identity can be overwhelming, yet essential to comprehending and providing customized service. In order to create a helping relationship, receptiveness and skill in asking about a person’s culture identity in intimate and informative ways is crucial. Better connection and outcomes from treatment come from adjusting assessment and treatment approaches to be more encompassing of the individuals’ needs and preferences. This class will look at practical strategies for learning about an individual within the context of their culture. One of the specific strategies will be to use the DSM 5 Cultural Formulation tool. 


This class has much of the same content as our previous Culturally Responsive Practices class.



Learning Objectives

  • Explore the interplay between unacknowledged culture differences, power differentials, and the possible impact on therapeutic service  

  • Review disparities in mental health care for minority populations

  • Consider how culturally responsive, individualized care can be used to address these disparities

  • Review strategies for asking about a person’s cultural identity and influences

  • Understand the application of the Cultural Formulation Interview
