Anxiety Disorders

The problem of “What If” thinking

Description

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions in the western world. Symptoms of anxiety often show up as physical problems so the underlying cause can go unrecognized for long time. In addition, the nature of anxiety means that the person needing help will likely be reluctant to want to address the problem. Those receiving services are better supported when the helper understands the symptoms of anxiety and how they drive people’s behavior. This class explores ways to talk about anxiety as well as current treatment modalities and interventions.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine what perpetuates anxiety and how it manifests

  • Analyze types of anxiety disorders and DSM 5 criteria

  • Explore evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders

  • Identify common techniques that help regulate anxiety symptoms
