Patient Engagement

Description

This class looks at conversations with children and adolescents where ambivalence about longer-term behavior change is the main theme. In these conversations, it is easy to play the role of the expert and tell the patient what they need to do to improve their situation. However, if this approach is perceived as confrontational it can have the opposite effect to that desired as the young person becomes more fixed on their position. Additionally, youth experiencing difficult situations may be more apprehensive of care options. This training presents a guiding style of communication for these conversations that explore what is important to and for the youth as they look ahead.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and respond to ambivalent statements
  • Use reflections and open-ended questions
  • Recognize and build upon “change talk”
  • Help the patient uncover discrepancies in their behaviors and their goals
