Hoarding Disorder

A love of things

Description

Hoarding behavior can be very frustrating for caregivers, family, landlords, and other professionals linked to providing safe housing. This class seeks to increase our understanding of this behavior by looking at two paradigms. One, that hoarding is a kind of anxiety disorder, with hoarding being the coping strategy that the person falls into. Another is that the person sees beauty in material things that others just can’t see. Many don’t see the behavior as a problem, which makes treatment difficult, while another manifestation is the deep and overwhelming shame that the disorder creates in its victims who are neurologically incapable of parting with their possessions.

Learning Objectives

  • Define Hoarding Disorder and identify various causes

  • Discuss the private and public health risks of hoarding

  • Consider the ethical and legal implications to the community and others
