Description

Motivational Interviewing (MI) builds rapport and professional alliance, but there are a lot of ups and downs in the process of behavior change. Effective practitioners of Motivational Interviewing may encounter new resistance when shifting from rapport-building to goal setting. Developing the MI skills of reflections and summaries fosters autonomy in individuals served and helps professionals move through the tasks of Motivational Interviewing. This session explores various strategies for taking steps toward successful action plans. 

Learning Objectives

  • Identify reflective responses that guide conversations from curiosity to commitment  

  • Explore summaries that include both change talk and sustain talk to foster a person’s autonomy

  • Practice strategies in guiding conversations to evoke effective action plans
