De-escalation: Children and Youth
Respond with empathy, not authority
Description
To reduce the intensity of a potentially violent encounter the helper must quickly create rapport and connection with the young person. Feeling understood instead of judged or threatened the youth can more likely calm themselves. The helper must retain their composure and not be reactive while moving toward the situation, so this class introduces and practices skills for self-regulation as well as connection and limit-setting.
