Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Healing and cultivating post-traumatic growth

Description

People who have suffered traumas may find it difficult or even impossible to talk about them. In some cases, they are unable even to recall what happened. This makes treatment difficult and can make a person look like they are not willing to address their problems. More recently, psychologists have termed the phrase Post Traumatic Growth to describe the process of recovery and the ability to thrive because of their trauma. Staff and family members who gain a better understanding of these elements can better help these people. This class explores these concepts and describes how treatments work.

Learning Objectives

  • Examine the stress response and define PTSD

  • Discover how stress and trauma affect the brain, memory, and emotion regulation

  • Identify evidence-based treatments for PTSD

  • Explore posttraumatic growth as a process and an outcome
