Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

How you think affects how you feel

Many mental health problems are caused by distorted and unhelpful patterns of thinking; in effect they are “thinking disorders.” Because people act on these disordered thoughts, their behaviors are often unproductive and dysfunctional. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) seeks to uncover these thought patterns and help the person change their behaviors. It is very useful to gain some understanding of this approach to therapy in order to support the skills people are learning. Indeed, these skills are used in almost every helping relationship.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the theory and vocabulary of CBT

  • Relate thoughts to emotions and behaviors

  • Examine cognitive distortions and how to address them

  • Investigate self-help CBT skills
