Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

How negative thought patterns affect people and how to address them

Many mental health problems are caused by distorted and unhelpful patterns of thinking. In effect they are “thinking disorders.” Because people act on these disordered thoughts, their behaviors are often unproductive and/or dysfunctional. The therapeutic approach that seeks to uncover these thought patterns and change the behaviors is the most commonly used therapy in mental health and is called CBT. It is vital that all human service professionals gain some understanding of this approach to therapy so they can support and reinforce the skills people are learning. Indeed, these skills are used in almost every helping relationship.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the theoretical underpinnings and history of CBT

  • Examine the relationship between thoughts, behaviors, and emotions

  • Uncover cognitive distortions

  • Depict CBT conversational techniques through case study
