Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Skills to improve mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness

For many people in treatment for a mental health problem, they are faced with contradiction – they are responsible to solve a problem they didn’t cause. In addition, they need to accept themselves, but at the same time push for change. These confusing dialectics need to be resolved before the person can move forward and change their life. Without this resolution, many are likely to continue to live a life of pain and turbulent relationships as they use adaptive strategies for survival that destroy relationships and keep them stuck. This class explores DBT, a skill-based treatment protocol for a wide range of mental health problems, including suicidality, borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety and many others.

Learning Objectives

  • Define the dialectic in the context of mental health

  • Explore theoretical background and history of DBT

  • Examine the 4 Pillars of DBT

  • Practice skills that can be applied when working with individuals with mental health concerns

  • Apply knowledge of DBT skills to scenarios
